Importing Photoshop PSD file into Illustrator

Hello,

I'm using Photoshop and Illustrator CS3. I'm fairly new at Adobe Illustrator, but I'm simply trying to import a layered PSD file into Adobe Illustrator.

What I'm doing is I'm going to File->Place, then I click "Convert Photoshop layers to object"

However, what I end up with is one layer titled "layer 1 + layer 2 + layer 3 + layer 4..."

where "layer 1" and the rest are the layer names from Photoshop. Please help, I have no idea what to do

I just saved my same file as a layered tiff in photoshop. When I open it in Adobe Illustrator, it's a flattened file again. What can I do to get a layered file in Adobe Illustrator?

I saved as a pdf, the text did come out in layers, but the pictures are all one layer.
