This has happened to me a few time, and is very frightening...Usually while working in V10 but has occured in CS. This is how it works or doesn't work...while working on a saved .ai file. With the drawing still open on screen go to the file folder and change the files name. Then go back to AI and close the drawing. Now, try to open the file by any methode, ie., double clicking on it, drag to AI in the Apps bar or do File open then pick the file with the changed file name. What happens is a warning dialoge will appear with invalid operand dialoges and it will not open. Don't panick, well kind of. A kind of fix is to open the corrupted file in adobe reader. Mine always open, then save as a PDF. Go back to AI and open this new PDF and resave as a EPS. The file will be there but things will have changed. Gradient will be expanded, layers will be flattened and text will be fragmented. But, at least you've got something to send to the print house. Hope this helps someone.

I just tried your example and couldn't duplicate the problem. I'm using CS on a Mac.

I created a file in CS as you suggested and saved it to the desktop. With the file still open in CS, I changed the name of the file on the desktop. I then went back to Illustrator and closed the original file. I went to the desktop and double-clicked on the renamed version of the file and it opened immediately.

With the renamed version open in CS, I made changes to the content of the renamed file and saved it. With that file still open in CS, I changed the name of the desktop-version once again, then went back to CS, saved and closed the open file. I quit CS. I double-clicked the desktop file and it launched CS and opened the file again with no problems.

It will be interesting to see whether others are experiencing the same problem.
