assign several circles to a circle path

how can i assign several coloured circles to a single circle path?

The answer to this might depend largely on how important it is to have a path. Circles in a circle could be acheived using the blend tool or the rotate tool and probably other ways too but not all of them will require circles to be assigned to a path. Do you need the path? Here's one way from Layers magazine, just substitute circles for stars.
