I recently had a problem with a vector that I found on the net. Although I realize that alot of these are locked for a reason, I like to break apart things I find to see just how they built what they made, not steal it. I found this logo, but when I tried to manipulate it, there was a strange icon (a pencil with a line through it) that would not allow me to do anything except zoom in and zoom out. After much research on the web, I found that the object was locked by some type of program that's out there that allows viewing but not manipulating (and yes I checked to make sure the object wasn't locked using that simple lock command.) I was told that unless I had a password, I would not be able to manipulate it. Wrong. I found a way. When you get your file, open it as usual, but then save it as an EPS in version 8. Then open the file in Corel Draw, hopefully you have this program as well. Corel Draw does not follow the same locking language and is discarded as junk or noise, and the image is maintained and is fully open. Just thought some people might like to know. After this you can export as an EPS and bring it back into illustrator with full manipulating capabilities.
