View Full Version : Graphic Styles copy... and I don't want them to.

Hi. Thanks for stopping by. Illustrator appears to duplicate a graphic style (in the graphic style pallette) when you use the copy > paste/paste in front command sequence. If you drag clone, than the new object refers to the same graphic style as the object copied.
Now I want to be able to paste in front and not have to clean up the duplicated styles resulting.
Searched the preferences (and the appearance/graphic styles pallette menu). Could do with a clue. In FreeHand there was a preference 'remember info' that you could switch off to cure this, incase that helps anyone be clear what I'm after.
Thanks.

As far as I can tell that is how it works. You select and copy then everything comes over when you paste. What frustrates me (on odd ocassions) is that new objects get tagged with the previous settings. Unless you tell Illu no! You can check the Options bar and maybe switch off items there but I think you get what you get in Illustrator Copy/Paste.
Anyone else know differently?

Yes, that's what I'd expect to happen really. I'm not sure if there's a way of disabling it but it's only a one click process to change the object back to one with a different fill and stroke. For example, before you apply a graphic style to the basic object, drag it into the graphic styles panel to create the "basic style". When you add any other graphic style to the object and copy/paste, you only need to click on the "basic style" in graphic styles to get the copy back to the original.

Hi Guys
Sorry about the time delay in me getting back to you (I'm an itinerant worker, and only work here where I'm physically sitting right now a few days a week - the other studios I work in are 'Quark-for-everything-whether-suitable-or-not' places).
Take on board what you say - so... can you find and change graphic styles?
I'm reluctant to let this go because: I know it's "only one click" but when the nature of the illustration is that you're repeating and adapting an object umpteen times, it becomes a drag really quickly. And, perhaps more importantly, when you've other designers who, erhem, don't grasp certain concepts - you can find you inherit their influence on work - so find you're faced with a thousand cloned (exactly the same) graphic styles in the pallette, all of which are assigned to their own individual object. Means it totally defeats the value having styles (ie: change once, update many). Being the freelancer I don't have the authority to do anything other than draw the team manager's attention to it and hope they'll indulge in some staff training... yeah.
Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated.
