View Full Version : Question about Rulers and Grids

This is a very novice question so I hope you will forgive me. I have just recently started teaching myself Illustrator and am having an issue with my rulers. I am using CS3 on a mac, and my rulers are numbered every half inch and its driving me nuts. When I use CS3 at school on a windows machine however, the numbering on the ruler is only every inch. I realize it seems trivial, but its throwing me off because I use both machines daily. So I am wondering if there is a setting somewhere that I can change in order to have the rulers on my mac only show numbering every inch. I have looked everywhere, and I cant find anything about changing them.

I don't know if there's something different happening on a Mac but if you go to Illustrator>Preferences>Units & Display Performance you can change the General to inches and then into Guides and Grid and change Gridline every: to one inch. This gives me a unit on every inch and gridlines that line up with those units too.
You may have already looked at this, so if it doesn't give you what you want then it's over to someone else for the answer.

Jay,
It depends on your zoom level. On my monitor, the inch ruler is numbered every inch when viewing @ 100%. Zoom in to 200%, and the ruler is numbered every 1/2". At 6400% the rulers are numbered every 1/16th inch. At 50% there's a number every 2".
I really don't know why you don't want to see all the numbers on your ruler, but just zoom out to 100% [Command-1] and you should have numbers at every inch. If Illustrator didn't add more numbers on the rulers when you zoom in, in extreme close-up viewing you probably wouldn't see any numbers at all. I am in the habit of toggling the rulers on and off [Command-R] so I only see them when I need to.
Joe >> You don't have to go into Preferences to change the ruler units. Control-click (Mac) on a ruler and you can change the increments on the fly.

Thanks again, micke, for the tip, I didn't know that. (I'm actually on a PC so that's of course right-click for me).
