Hello

I want to try and create the logo similar to what mamboserver uses
http://www.mamboserver.com/

Im a graphics newbie and 1st wish to know - would illustrator be a better place to create such a logo, or photoshop (I know the difference between vector and bitmap)?

Also, can anyone point me towards a relevant tutorial or symbol gallery?

Thanks
Jon

If you know the difference between vector and bitmap then you answered your first question. Illustrator. However if all you are doing is making a web banner and you will never have the need for the logo in print then you can get away with working in Photoshop.

The symbol you can probably get away with typing an * and finding a suitable font in Illustrator. If not making one of the teardrop shapes is fairly easy. After that, use Effects>3D>Rotate to angle the shape how you want. And basically that is it. I recommend using Expand after you are satisfiyed with the shape to make it permanent.
