Text Wrap problems

I can't work out how the Text Wrap function works in Illustrator. I have read the Help menu and followed the instructions, but the text does not flow around the object or other text placed in the layer above the text to be moved.
I put the object/text in the same layer as the text to be moved, then press: Type/Text Wrap/Make What am I doing wrong? It shouldn't be that complex, surely!

Hi Nan,

1) The object being wrapped and the text must be on the same layer.

2) Text must be below the object being wrapped.

3) Text must be Area text, not point text.

Those are the three key elements for text wraps. Do you have all 3?

Thanks. I was using Type Tool not Area Type.
