Hey guys, I have a 3.0ghz core 2 duo, 2 gb ram, 300gb hd, nice vid card, all my other programs run smoothly and quickly. However, Illustrator and Photoshop both seem to lag when closing files...any ideas?

Thanks!

How much of a lag? Photoshop is usually okay for me but Illustrator takes about 20 seconds or more to open and maybe a little less to close. Closing files is not a problem though (similar specs to you).

The more ram and processing power you have, the faster Illustrator, Photoshop and InD will close. I was running a Dual core G5 here at the shop with 2 gigs of ram and Ill and PS and InD were all slow to close. We upgraded to Dual Quad cores with 4 gigs and now everything closes right away.

When working in AI and PD you have many steps undo, as well as alot of file information that is saved to give you a quick response time. Closing a file wants to clear all those temporary files (because you no longer need them) also saving files means that usually (id you save compatible files) an alternative version of the image has to be created (to be compatible).
If the file is slow to save when you have only one app open it s usually the compatible file that is lagging, an indication that there is alot of complex rendering/flattening happenng (usually larger more complex files will lagg more). If you are experiencing lagg with smaller files it is usually because you do not have the RAM to load the whole application/ all applications and your computer makes a paging file (to emulate more RAM than you physically have). In the old days one could turn off virtual RAM, because it was really a problem causing snail paced design but todays computers handle it smarter.(checking hard disk space while opening the application, with no image will give you a hint of the size that the app bumps the paging file)
Increasing to 4 from 2 mb RAM will probably be more efficient that upgrading your compter.
Also a question are you saving to a network drive?

I have a similar problem. On my workstation running XP Pro (3.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 w/4gb ram), Illustrator CS3 hangs up when closing. Sometimes I have to ctrl/alt/del and force it to close.

I don't have this problem on my home system running Vista.

Some have mentioned that this might have something to do with the print spooler but I still haven't been able to solve the problem.
