scatter & pattern brushes remaining inactive in ai

Hi guys

I've noticed that my 'Scatter' & 'Pattern' brushes are inactive. i've checked that they're installed and they are but i cant think of anything i can do to make them active

i've tried changing the tool i'm using (from paintbrush to pencil etc) but nothing works

any suggestions?

(i'm working in rgb mode and not cmyk which i know makes a difference with filters in ps, but it doesnt seem to affect brushes)

all greyed out - the scatter and pattern brush menus are greyed out and i've tried everything i can think of to make them active but nothing - all the others are working fine though

Shut down AI. Trash your AI preferences. They should be in library-preferences- AI version?. Restart your CP, open AI. Are the brushes restored?
