Does anybody still make animated gifs or is flash the norm? Are there any advantages using one over the other?

Flash is pretty much the norm but be mindful that alternative browsers allow the user to disable plugins such as Flash. I use Opera and keep plugins disabled because the (sometimes) excessive use of Flash makes my eyeballs ache.

My unsolicited $.02 is go lightly with anything animated unless your site is specifically intended to showcase animation.

I agree with you Phenn but nowadays, with no sound or any movement in a site, it just looks dated. I do not support using major animated sites for every client, I too believe that probably 80-90% of clients out there would be better off with a static site but I think it would look cool if there were some kind of movement to refresh the eye. My .02 cents. You can check out my site and see how it is lacking something. Cheers.
