Text into a shape.

Hello, I am a new member/ frustrated design student. Does anyone know how to put text or a pattern into a shape in Illustrator CS2, or even a photo into a shape in PS CS2? Does it work the same way? Please help me.

I think "masking" could be what you need. Look up masking in the help menu. Look up masking in both programs. They work differently between the two but both will do what you're asking.
