Creating ray of light?

Ok, I'm a novice designer and have a huge logo task to do. Actually it's pretty simple, but I don't know how to design the main graphic element.

The logo is basically a word that contains an o, and the client wants the o to have a ray of light beaming out of it with rays in all directions.

How the fudge to I do that? I would really really appreciate anyone willing to help me with this. I see it all the time, but have no idea what tools to use to create it!

If you had a sample, I may be able to better know what you are talking about doing. Shouldn't be too bad.......

I don't really have one, except in my head. :) Basically just the letter O with some light rays beaming off of it. If you go to http://user.fundy.net/morris/redirect.html?photoshop16.shtml there is a tutorial there that I have been trying to follow. The sample words given pretty much sums up what I want to do. Except that this sample only shows you how to do white on black, and I need the background to be white. everytime I start with a white background and a black text, the rays disappear as I create them!

You could make two rays of light, one colored yellow and the other colored cyan. Lower the percentage of color for each until your light ray shows up on a white background. Use the star tool to create the ray, give it a small inner diameter and a larger outer diameter, try 99 point...you can scale it up or down later. Use fill, no stroke. Scale one star a little smaller than the other, play with transparency. Rotate one a little more or less than the other. Move your letter O on top of the ray.
