I just got my upgrade to CS4 yesterday but didn't have a whole lot of time to check most of it out until today, and I found a rather annoying problem that I was wondering if anyone else has had it:
When I type something and want to change the font, I can't use the arrow keys to scroll down or up in the fonts list (either the character panel or the top bar) for more than a few font. It will then jump all the way to the bottom of the list to some fonts with names starting with boxes.
I'm on XP Pro by the way.

Normally I start typing the name of the font, and after tyoing the first couple of letters I sometimes use up and down arrows...works fine for me, but on a Mac:o

It works fine for me. You have to click in the text selection window and then use the down arrow to change the font.

My legit copy (windows) works fine, however on my second computer that I installed it on and.... um... used an alternative activation method I get the same issue.
Now, that could just be a coinkydink, since my main system runs Vista, and the other runs WinXP, so it may have nothing to do with the legitimacy of the installation.
At work I have it for Mac and it works fine.

How can you type the first letter of a font's name if you don't know which one you're looking for? That's why the arrow method is nice, especially since Illy is the only app in the CS that doesn't have a font preview outside the annoying Type menu.
I'm running the updater to see if there's something in there that fixes the problem, but it's definitely not due to 'alternative activation' as I don't use illegal software.
Googling turned up a thread on the Adobe forums with a bunch of folks having the same problem, but no solution.

And Adobe posted the solution (for me at least) on their site:
In Illustrator CS4 choose Edit > Preferences > Type.
Remove the check-mark for Enable Missing Glyph Protection.
