I'm using Illustrator CS 3 and I've found myself not knowing how to properly create a png file with a transparent background from my drawings. I've checked the settings and they seem fine but when I export an object it doesn't seem to crop it at all and the background is white instead of transparent.
I'm sure I'm missing out on a small detail so can someone please let me know what that is?

Just making sure....
The only other thing I can think of, off the top of my head, is that you are placing it in something that does not support transparency... (wrong PDF type for example)
This would mean you are exporting or creating the PNG, OK, it's just you are placing or importing it wrong?

It doesn't crop - it takes the whole art board. Try making the art board the same size as the graphic and make sure you have only one layer showing.

If you "Save for the Web" rather then export then you can click on the "Image Size" tab and UNCHECK the Clip to Artboard option and the image will crop to the art size, rather than the artboard. (make sure you hit the apply button)
There is also an option box for transparacy.
