Insert a picture into a custom shape?

I'm trying to insert a picture into a custom shape, and have found several tutorials, which none have worked yet. I'd like to take a picture and insert it into one of the custom shapes in PhotoShop CS. Then add a style to it to make it pop.... I've seen it around so I know it can be done, but just haven't figured out how to get it there......

It's a two layer job.

Put the photo under the shape and use the shape as a mask on the photo layer. Then set the fill to 0% on the shape and add your layer effects…

I believe that should work.

You should be able to do it all in one layer... draw the custom shape as a path, (should be a button in the tool options at the top to do this) use the paths pallette to converth the path to a selection (under the flyout menu) ... add a layer mask to the layer with the image, hide all, then delete the selected area.
