Can anyone out there tell me the difference between the student edition CS2 and the Professional edition (aside from the price)

You can't upgrade a student edition. Neather can you use it for commercial work.

Hi erjobo,
As far as the software itself, it's exactly the same once you get by the Splash screen which says "Educational version" for some of the applications. For some reason, IDCS2 doesn't even note Educational version in the Splash screen. These programs are in no way watered down applications that are missing features if that's what you're concered about.
And at 1/3 the "regular" price, who cares that you can't upgrade? :)
Hope this helps!

Actually unless Adobe has changed its policy you can upgrade through them. I was using the Education Version while in college and when I graduated and wanted to move into making some money I contacted Adobe. They sent me the full version at the upgrade price minus the books. I am sure if you contact them it may still be that way.

They may have changed their policy since then because now nobody gets any books. At least, no books that are actually worth anything.
Sorry about the bitter post but for the money spent yearly on these programs, I find it hard to swallow the "books are too expensive to print" line that software manufacturers dole out.

I hope to buy software for my "artist" 11 year old. What's best for the young and passionate? Adobe or Macromedia and what about student editions?

Truthfully these are pro level programs.... On the Adobe side there is Photo Elements which would go a long way into the fun side of photo work.... if you are Apple based then you can always use iPhoto.... I do not think Macromedia has an entry level program....
As for the student or academic versions..... they are usually reserved for college level students..... but cost about 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of the full versions.... there are sometimes limits to what the student versions can do compared to the full versions....
Good luck and hope this helps....

Thank you for the information. We are PC, not Apple based. I'll look into Photo Elements
