I've been hearing alot of buzz about AJAX and recently went to a Shaun Inman speaking engagement, sponsored by AIGA.
AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. Many have seen it work in forms, google maps, and some Flash.
I asked Shaun about accessibility and Section 508 and as long as the screen reader can find the new information, it's ok. I'd also be concerned about the user having JavaScript turned off.
