Hi chaps - do any of you work in the media industry? advertising? my magazine is a few months old now and i want to start including other articles into it each month, but i need to make sure i do it legally (not breaking copyright etc) and also how i go about obtaining various stories, pictures etc

Do a google or findlaw search on 'fair use'. Typically, unless otherwise stated by the publisher, you can indeed lift a small piece of a published article or editorial. You must credit the source, mind you.
If you've not already chatted with an attorney about fair use practice, I would do so when you've got the chance. Best to be safe as opposed to sorry.
Good luck!
hey phenn - many thanks for your help - dont say sorry, you've helped me
i see a lot of local mags around my area using celeb pics or related articles - i dont want to use much of them but from time to time i would like to publish a story - this is where i'm stuck:
1. i'd like to publish celeb (type) interviews - but how do i get an interview to start with?
2. i'd like to use some celeb pictures - but who do i contact?
3. if a story is run by a local tv station - is it possible to obtain the story for print?
i'm ok on copyright stuff, but i'm just stuck on who to contact without making a baffoon of myself
thanks phenn, how are you today? and is it true.......are all people in florida pretty people? ;)
was looking at holiday homes to buy the other week - not bad prices are they?
Paul C

I don't know about Florida but everyone here in California is blonde and muscular - except me… :D
I work in the concert industry.
1. Call their publicist or manager
2. See above
3. Call the station
Don't worry about making a buffoon out of yourself, it's an industry peopled by such types. And soon you will know the ropes and be saying things like "Let's do lunch"…
Just go for it mops, there's nothing to lose.
Best of Luck!

Even the women .............wow....................
oh thank you paul for your help, again ;)

Paul on anothe note, how do i go about obtaining a media pass? we have a celebrity golf championship coming up (hey patrick duffy and michael douglas came over last year...................i was really chuffed !!! ahhhh bobby ewing!!).......... anyway - would like to go up this year for work purposes - any ideas?

Paul on anothe note, how do i go about obtaining a media pass?
If you're working independently as opposed to covering the event for an outlet, just contact the host of the event and ask them for credentials. They'll want to know what outlet you're covering it for, but will likely be happy to provide a pass if they know it will bring them some press.

My son is a rather brilliant musician but also finding out that it's not always the easiest occupation to undertake.
I dearly admire anyone who takes their creative abilities and puts them into a tangible form. Again, good luck and knock 'em dead.

This is what i wanted to say but i could find the words in my head - so can i say ditto (except i dont have a son though ;o))

PaulC, can post a link to a snippet of Black Cross so I can check it out and see if I know which song it is? I was about 16 in 1979 so I'm hip with modern music but I'm more of dinosaur at heart and don't have real deep knowledge of the Peppers. (I'm more of a The Band, Allman Bros, Zep, Airplane, Syd Barrett, Bob Dylan kinda person;)

Hey Paul,
Congrats on the music. Really cool! And best of luck on the album!
And you definitely got it right on the celebrities. Having worked on a lot of TV commercials over the years, I've worked with a few. All were definitely regular people, but I've been lucky enough to just work with the nice ones.
I was one of the Art Directors on the Bill Cosby campaign for Jell-O Pudding when it first started back in the mid '70's. Cool guy, very funny, and had lunch with the whole crew. Great fun!
I worked with Bob Hope on a public service commercial. He was by far the most professional actor I ever worked with. He delivered the script just twice, both times perfectly and exactly to time. Amazing!
I was also Art Director for the Plaza Hotel ad campaign in NYC, which was a celebrity campaign at that time. I worked with Jack Lemmon, Gene Schallet, and Andrea McArdle & Reed Shelton (the original Annie and Daddy Warbucks on Broadway).
When I first got into the business out of college, I worked at Young & Rubicam in NYC. You couldn't help but run into celebrities there. One morning I was getting off the elevator and literally bumped into a rather large gentleman with an incredibly deep wonderful voice. He said, "Excuse me young man," and proceeded onto the elevator. I turned around as the doors closed and caught a glimpse of who almost flattened me. And thought, "Holy Sh*t, Orson Wells." (The voice of Eastern Airlines)

oh my god ! how lucky are you lot ? how lucky? Bob Hope ? dear god i'd have been speechless !.........and bill cosby.......orson wells?...................i cant help it, regular people or not i'm impressed - theyre legends !

It was the first song I wrote for 45 Grave, my old band, in 1979. Cashing in all these years later is - cool. Hold on to your rights guys, you never know what's going to happen.
Adobe Ace - Orson Welles? Now that is impressive! Always nice to hear from you.

Mops, Carmel is about 361 miles from Los Angles, so I won't be driving by there any time soon. I suppose you could make it half way across Germany before reaching 361 miles from England. ;)
Ace, the voice of american airlines? I'd need a hypnotist to be able to remember back that far!

Hey Repro,
Actually it's Eastern Airlines. "The Wings of Man." I can still hear Orson's voice.
I started working on Eastern in June 1973. It's a very long time ago, in a galaxy far away.

Mops, the local mountain ranges reach at least 9,000 ft I believe, I'm not a skier. The last time I went up there I think it took about 2 hrs. on the freeway before we started really climbing. I don't go up too often.

mops - Yeah in general I'm pretty darn laid back, but if you push me at work I will bite your head off. Hate to do it, but sometimes you have to.
We just had a marketer come in from Capitol Records. She's new hire. She had been there all of a week when I was doing an ad mat for her. I got it done and took it over there. In front of 3 other people she said "I hate white text, where I come from we don't use white text". I finished the conversation and then took her aside.
In a very angry voice I said "Don't ever tell me you hate anything I do, I'm not going to do it to you so don't do it to me. Not to mention that the statement I hate white text is ludicrous. And I don't care where you come from, you're not there any longer".
I've been with my company for 15 years and am the AD. So I don't put up with pure stupidity like that and my philosophy is to set someone straight immediately. I don't let things fester.
Now we're getting along famously, she just needed some guidance - and a good spanking…
So I'm not always laid back but it is my preferred state of being…
peace
well good on you - h8ll i'd have been ranting at that - possibly wouldnt have had the sense to take her aside - good on you paul - how really rude is that? i hate people being so rude - good on you, she wont do it again
and what is wrong with white text?........................best bin all my business cards and tear up my magazine cover then ;o)
i'm in a tricky situation, i'm taking someone on, on a 3 month trial basis - nice girl, can imagine it would work out well - i happen to know her bf through my parents, but not to talk to you know, enough just to say hello in passing - anyway - the other afternoon i needed to speak with her on the telephone, he answers and i hear voices in the background - i ask to speak to her but he carried on conversation with me - but said something naughty, not flirty, but i did take offence on top of that she's a potential employee - the comment was in front of her - i can see that she'd be a great asset to my business but i now have a big issue about this - i'm really not narrow minded at all - however, what he said was very disrespectful and in appropriate, usually i'd have wiped the floor with him, but instead i just bluntly repeated that i wanted to speak to her
am i being too picky over this? it honestly was rude and really inappropriate - and i dont even know him well enough to joke over stuff like that, it was also very disrespectful in front of her too
should i just let it go and if it happens again just tell him straight?
Now we're getting along famously, she just needed some guidance - and a good spanking…
peace
:) :) ...............i just picked up on that :)

I don't think that you're being weird. It was stupid of him and it put you in an uncomfortable situation.
You're just going to have to feel it out. Maybe nothing else needs to be said, maybe it does. If you're the type of person that is going to hold onto this I would deal with it ASAP. Grudges are worthless. Better to just set it straight.
If he does it again you're going to have to slam him back to reality, which he obviously has no concept of. The unfortunate truth is that people like this have no boundaries and are likely to cross yours again until they're set straight.
That's why I did it right then and there with the genius marketer. I have boundaries and if you cross them you are going to hear about it right away.
But I'd much rather not have to do this and just do my work, go home and perhaps sip on a beer…
Best of Luck mops

I can't help thinking that if I was in your potential employee's position I would have been fuming mad at anyone, friend, family of stranger, that tried to say anything witty and clever at all, to one of my potential employers. If I were she I would have ripped the phone out his hand before even three whole words were uttered. And after I finished my conversation and got off the phone a small fireworks display would have immediately followed.

thanks Paul thanks Repro
this is exactly my point - i dont know how she reacted but if it was me - i'd have swiped the phone from my bf and wiped the floor with him 1. for being so disrespectful to me (her as a gf) and 2. speaking like that to a potential employer
it's not like he's a stupid man either, he's professional he should have known better. I can let it go for now but your both right, it will happen again and i know i have to deal with it.
my bf is furious but as it's my company he wont interfere unless i need him too
i dont understand, i dont even know the chap, and i dont give out flirty vibes to bring on that sort of reaction, i'm very careful where work is concerned of how i'm portraying myself - so i am annoyed at it, if not quite sickened by what he said
i'll deal with it if it comes up again, which i have a feeling it will - thanks again guys
and Paul.........you definetly done the right thing, i wouldnt like to cross you ;)

Sure it starts with 'the clothes out of the bedroom window' flaying.
But in the end it always ends up like, well, have you ever seen that short animation classic from the '70s titled Bambi Meets Godzilla?
If you have, then picture me as Bambi and any and all of my previous GFs as Godzilla.
You'd have to see it. It's a great analogy.
