View Full Version : How can I join two tables?

I have tables imported from Word that were created as independent tables on each page. I want to rejoin them in InDesign as one complete table and then thread (link) the table from page to page. Is there a way in InDesign to do this?

Although there is not a way to simply link tables out of the box, there may very well be a plug-in or script to do just that. You can link the text frames, but the tables will not be linked (just two tables in a threaded text frame). I'll keep hunting for a plug-in or script.
If you haven't formatted the tables yet, you might try converting each table to tabbed text, then selecting all the text and converting back to a table. If you HAVE styled it and do that AND you look at the plug-in I recommended on your other post (smartstyles by woodwing software)...that might work too. Not the best option, but a workaround...anyone know of a plug-in to take out all that work?

After some trial and error, I found I was able to copy text from a second table and add it to the end of the first table — provided that I'd first created enough empty cells to prevent overflow.
Having thus married several pages of tables into one continuous table, I'm able to continue on without worrying about table reflow, since ID handles that so beautifully.
Now if only ID handled table styles as elegantly...
