InDesign CS2 question

Hi,
I placed a logo that was done in Illustrator (and also saved as EPS) into my InDesign document. The logo has a transparent background -- I checked it in Illustrator (Document Setup and also Transparency Grid). However, when I place the logo on a color background in the InDesign document, the rectangle that contains the logo has no background (is transparent), but the area around the logo itself (the "bounding" box) is white. I opened a Quark document (yuk) to test it, and placed the logo on a color background, and it works. The logo background is transparent and the color shows through in the areas where it is supposed to. So it seems that the problem is with InDesign. Any ideas? I'm on deadline and the client will soon be wondering where the work is. Thanks very much.

Just to clarify, are you placing the Ai document or the eps?

Is there a fill applied to the frame in Indesign?

OK, I figured out the answer to my own question:
Instead of using the "Place" command in InDesign, I just copied the Illustrator logo and pasted it into the InDesign document. Usually you draw a rectangle and Place a photo or object into the rectangle, which worked for the logo, except for the transparent background issue. Who knew? If anyone has a better way, or any other comments about this, please let me know. Thanks.

Sorry, to answer both questions. I was placing the EPS, not the AI. There was no fill applied to the background.

That's not really the answer, but it is a workaround. I don't love it as a solution because weird things can happen when copying from Illy and pasting into Indy. Most of the time it will be okay, but every now and then...

Sounds like it is a preview issue: turn on Hi-res Preview (View>Display Performance>High Quality Display).

By the way, you don't have to have a pre-existing frame to place the graphic into. You certainly can do it that way, but it is not a necessity like it is in Quark.

Placing EPS files in InDesign and having preview where you have proxy settings on will show you an opaque sqare. When we are talking Transparent it is cut out transpatent right? Semi opaque you will need AI or PDF files, you have in clipboard preferences from Illustrator and Indesign how to handle clipping, I would not recommend usin cut and paste for logos, since it makes it hard to see what logo is referenced, and if you need to change you will not be able to verrify the version (and or creation date) of the link to see that it is the correct corporate identity.

I think that option is only available if placing .ai files - original poster stated EPS is being placed (I'm not getting into the merits of .ai vs EPS -- I know the benefits, but EPsis what being placed here!)

Hmm just tried it there. I forgot that it's just with .ai

With the eps there's an option when saving it in illustrator to have Transparent or Opaque background.
