Golden Sections | New Layers TV Episode | Cool Deal from OWC

comp-masking2.jpg

Let’s get this party started. First off, there’s the obvious pointer to the Layers TV episode that’s up today. Corey is covering a tutorial on how to create animations in After Effects, and I’m talking about Flash animations and masking – basic principles that will take your Flash designs to the next level. We’re trying to keep the shows short and suite (couldn’t help the pun there), and I’ve made more of a conscious effort to stick with building up small in Flash, so you can put all of the components together and make something bigger with the episodes. Let me know what you think of that. I could spend 45 minutes in 1 episode explaining all of these details out, but who has the time to watch us. Well.. I’m glad you do.

There are two more things that I think are worth mentioning. Did you know that most compositional masterpieces can be traced back to the use of Golden Sections? Did you also know that Other World Computing can upgrade your Mac Pro for $1,250 less than the Apple store can? I couldn’t believe it either. Check it out at the jump.

On the Golden Section

If you want to read up on the concept of the Golden Sections, there is the obvious Wikipedia reference, or the one at Golden Number. Without nerding out completely, this can be seen as a solid foundation of compositional design. Corey has a great tutorial on how to be able to build one from Scratch in Illustrator.

Check out the Tutorial Here.

Some Cool Mac Deals

I was at work in the morning when I got a cool money-saving tip from one of our Deal Hunters (they’re not on payroll as a Deal Hunter, per se. They are just people who LOVE technology and love it even more when they are saving cash.)

The short of it: If you were to go to the Apple Store and try to upgrade your Mac Pro to 8GB of RAM and 1TB of Hard Drive, it would average about $1,900. Other World Computing has those same upgrades for about $650 – saving over 1,200 dollars! I thought it was too good to keep to our office. Little by little, I’ve been upgrading my removeable drives to OWC, and I can’t say that I have been disappointed – they just work great. I’ll make sure that I do a “show and tell” with them on the show very soon – I’ll show how they are helping me in Lightroom.

Have a great Thursday everyone!

Hey Guys,

great show, I always love watching it!
I have one problem: I can’t import the Golden Section into Photoshop’s Custom Shapes. I only get a black rectangle after I send it to the Custom Shapes. So where’s the trick?

And the other thing Ilike to know is: When do you bring us a full review an test of the Wacom Cintiq UX12?

Cheers
Andi

The link to the tutorial video doesn’t work — I see the ad that plays before it but then the tutorial doesn’t load. Is anyone else out there having the same problem?

Cheers
Nas
