Living In Layers - The OFFICIAL Layers Magazine Blog
First Look: Within the Frame | Illustrator 2 Photoshop | Contest Time
Happy Monday everyone! So I am slowly getting through my copy of David Duchemin’s “Within The Frame” (Make sure you click on this link to check it out.. you can download a sample chapter from here!) and I have to say, I am thoroughly enjoying the book! This book not like many of the books out there – and I am very grateful of that. I think im about 40% through and in that short amount of time i’ve:
- Wanted to throw out all of my images and start over (A much positive experience than it sounds)
- Wanted to fire up Lightroom and meditate over each image that really speaks to me.
- Turn off all of the lights in my house except one, and just put the camera to my eye and feel for the buttons.
- Walk around with a Hoodman Loupe attached to my eye for like 3 hours
- Travel to a far off land and shoot some images
- Travel to the flea market around the corner from me and shoot some images.
Reading David’s blog at Pixelated image, you’d know that he is a very deep person and a master at the written word. One of the things that I feel is totally working on this book is the fact that while the book is -deep- you never feel like he’s talking over your head. I love Michael Freeman’s “The Photographer’s Eye” but it had a little bit of that for me – I always felt like I needed to pre-empt the recommendation with “It’s deep.. you’re going to need to stick with it a bit to get something out of it.” Reading WTF feels like someone’s right there -next- to you talking you through something that they are incredibly passionate about and that kind of feeling is very infectious. Combine that with incredible images complete with exposure info and background summary, and practical tips and tricks for shooting, and you have a book that you dont want to finish fast. It feels like a slow and savory read- which I think is just what the doc orders when thinking about photography.. let’s all slow it down and redefine what it is we are looking for. Once I finish the book up, i’ll give you a more complete summary – but so far.. it’s awesome.

I found with a slow read, many of the concepts in WTF translate into every other creative area of my life. Love that.
