Episode Summary

Corey shares some favorite web resources for artists and designers.

  • Both Corey and RC love iStockPhoto. It’s easy to search for photos and to use their credit purchase system
  • dafont.com is a cool font site that’s simple, easy to search, and offers custom preview options
  • If you are creating a design and need some filler copy, visit Lorem Ipsum to quickly get however much you need
  • Brandsoftheworld.com has vector and hi-rez logos of many big-name companies. Make sure you are mindfull of copyright laws.
  • Coolhomepages.com is great site for inspiration and to keep up with trends in web design
  • Corey goes to bltomato.com a lot for inspiration. This company designs posters for big Hollywood films
  • If you have a font but don’t know what style it is, take it to whatthefont.com and find out
  • Typophile is a site for learning about typography. There’s a great forum that’s very useful
  • Jacob Cass writes a blog called justcreativedesign.com that has a lot of good design content

RC talks about backing up your photo collection using Lightroom in combination with external drives.

  • It’s important to keep plenty of free space on your computer and to backup your image catalogs
  • You can set Lightroom preferences to backup your catalogs as often as you like
  • Create a new backup collection in Lightroom and move all of your smaller collections into one backup collection
  • Right-click on the new collection name and export collection as catalog
  • Choose your backup drive as the location and export the catalog
  • Holding down Option when opening Lightroom allows you to choose a catalog to work from in Lightroom
  • Lightroom will work from this catalog when it opens until you change it again
  • There’s no reason to catalog your images on your computer’s hard drive. Use a portable backup drive.
  • RC likes using Mercury On-The-Go 300 Gig portable drive, as well as the Mercury Elite to back everything up
  • You can find both of these drives, and many more, at Other World Computing
