I work for a commercial printer, and I am on the receiving end of these types of files. I work primarily with spot colors. The beauty of spot colors is that they don't have to run the gauntlet of the work flow preserving the actual color value like CMYK. All a spot has to do is maintain its separateness, you don't have to have the purple of 2577, though it does help with color proofs and aproximate look on the screen.

This was a great tip, the kind that makes my work easier. I go straight to plates from Indesign. If I had that file with only CMYK, I would have to take it into Photoshop, select the white in each letter of the spot color type, and make a separate tiff file to drop into Idesign as a spot color. The way you do it is the best for both of us. I save time and you get your work on the press without extra hands on your file.

Hmmm... I assume multichannel images do not save well as PDF files, do they? I think that's a situation only for EPS... I'll have a try on this anyway, a very clever use of the PDF instead of the old formats.
