Voices That Matter Conference

So I’m sitting here hanging out at the Voices That Matter conference in San Francisco – sitting in the crowd and listening to presenters for a change. Yesterday I attended two 3-hour pre-con sessions on building a website from scratch, and I had a blast doing it. I wanted to come to this conference and talk because there were so many people that come to conferences like this to get specific information on a small component of the web, but sometimes feel very overwhelmed with the web process as a whole. I figured I could give back by teaching on some of the process.

The teaching was done yesterday, and I got to sit and just get inspired by some amazing speakers. The conference kicked off with Nancy Aldrich-Ruenzel. Immediately after, Rahaf Harfoush took the stage and talked about her involvement in the Obama campaign using Social Media. Rahaf’s got a book coming out called “Yes We Did” which talks about this in more detail, and I have to say – after checking out her presentation I felt my mind racing with different ideas and ways to leverage social media into the things we do. Incredibly inspiring.. I can’t wait to get the book.

Right after that Joel Postman gave a great presentation called “Sorry. Web 1.0 Is No Longer Supported ” and focused on taking Social Media and making it a part of an overall strategy on the web. Interestingly enough, there were a lot of sites and terms and practices that I was not aware of (Ever heard of Amazon Mechanical Turk or Short Task?) that make the wheels spin even further on leverage and incorporation. Check out his newest book, “SocialCorp” for more info.

Finally, I was able to pop in and see a new favorite author of mine, Aarron Walter and on his presentation called “Free Range Content: Unlock Your Ideas to Increase Your Reach.” The presentation went into a little bit more specifics, talking about specific programs and strategies that can be used to get your content out there, and how to make better use of the web to generate ideas. Aaron’s recent book “Building Findable Web Sites: Web Standards SEO and Beyond” should prove to be a great read as well.
