Where’s My Rounded Rectangle Tool?

Artists who are old pros in Adobe Illustrator are quite happy when they learning InDesign, because so many of the palettes and tools in both applications are so similar. This makes it easy to pick up a lot of the ins and outs of InDesign very quickly. But some of the old Illustrator favorites, like the Rounded Rectangle tool, are mysteriously missing. But not to worry, you can still round the corners of a rectangle. Just draw a rectangle with the Rectangle tool (M), and go to the Object menu > Corner Effects… and in the dialog window that opens choose Rounded for the Effect, specify a Size (radius) and click OK. You can also apply this same Rounded Corner Effect in the Pathfinder palette (Window > Object & Layout > Pathfinder). Just click the button that looks like a Rounded Rectangle.
