Sunsets, After Effects, & Photoshop World

sunset

Hey everyone, Happy Monday. I spent the weekend trying to get some home pictures of the baby to make as Easter cards, and then running around playing around with sunsets. The pic to the right is a picture of a couple of friends just taking in the last rays of the day. Pic was shot with the Nikon D90, a camera that I find myself continuously pulling out more of these days. Over the next couple of days I’ll put some pictures of various scenarios to show why I am digging it. Heck.. I taped the entire DIY Easter card thing.. maybe I’ll just post a couple of videos showing how I made it (and how it blew up in my face!) Oh yeah.. that was fun… :)

Steve Holmes in AE
Let’s start you off with a little motion graphics action. Steve Holmes from Energi has a really cool tutorial on the use of the Wiggle Transform operator in After Effects CS4. Check it out!

1 PREPARE LAYERED ARTWORK
I always prepare my graphics in Illustrator, because of its vector qualities. This workflow allows me to keep all the layers (as with Photoshop) and yields a much clearer and crisper result even when scaled up within After Effects. One important note: Make sure to set the layer structure correctly and always name your layers in a logical manner. Working in an organized way will make the animation process faster, making life much easier if you need to go back and change things later on.

Contest Time
Go to the Contact page, select the Layers Blog drop-down, then fill in your name, email address and answer to the following question. This is a special contest where I will take submissions till Sunday 5PM, and the winners will be announced Monday morning.

The Contest Question: We have a review of the Nikon D90 on the website. Tell me who wrote the review, and three things about the Nikon D90 that you learned from the review. Pretty simple huh?

Part 2: Go to the Photoshop World website, and tell me the three classes that I am teaching next week in Boston.

This time around, there will be 2 TICKETS. So.. 2 separate people can win A TICKET TO THIS MARCH’S BOSTON PHOTOSHOP WORLD!!!!! After this week, there will be no more (at least, till Vegas) so if you’ve been wanting to go and want a chance.. now is your chance!!

(remember.. just the ticket.. we won’t pay for you to get there or hotel)

That’s it for today. Make sure you tell your friends about it.. pass it on! Put it on your Facebook/Twitter/Email campaigns.. and if you win, make sure you say hello! We’ll see you guys tomorrow!

RC- seeing the image above has me wondering if there are any good techniques for using HDR with people in the images. Both in the shooting set up and in post. Typically when applying the photomatix enhancements people tend to go REALLY red, and have that ‘edge’ look to them. Would you recommend processing in PS and using layer masks to brush over them to remove the effect? Or is there another way? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
